Who is paying to sit beside your category’s answers

A question that triggers an ad is a question somebody has already put a price on. Rixe reports which of yours do, and who turns up there.

Only surfaces with a results page (Google AI Overviews, SERP measurement) carry ads. Add an advertiser as a competitor →

Ads inside the answer

A sponsored placement is not a banner off to the side. On the surfaces that carry them it sits in the answer, in the same shape as the recommendations around it.

What it pushes out

Answer space is finite. When a placement takes a line, an organic mention loses one — which is visible in the same prompt history you already track.

An advertiser is a competitor

Whoever pays to appear on your questions is competing for the same answer, whether or not anyone put them on the rival list. You can move one across in a click.

In depth

What can honestly be counted

Advertising inside AI answers is early enough that most of what is written about it is speculation. What can be counted today is narrow and specific: on surfaces that still render a results page around the generated answer, ads appear, they can be seen, and the share of your category's questions that carry them can be measured.

That number is worth having for a reason that has nothing to do with buying ads. A question that triggers an ad is a question somebody has already decided is worth money — which makes ad load the cheapest available signal of commercial intent in a category, whether or not you ever bid on it.

Where a surface does not render a results page, we say the measurement is not available rather than estimating one. Sponsored placements inside assistant answers are arriving, and until they are consistently labelled and consistently visible to a measurement, anything reported about them would be a guess with a chart on it.

Thoughts on Rixe

Especially interesting for SaaS companies. It's important to know which brands stand out when users ask AI for alternative products.
The good thing is: Thanks to tools like these, marketing teams might not just have to guess. Even if AI answers aren't always consistent, tracking specific queries over time can reveal meaningful trends. That's why I find the area Rixe focuses on valuable. It's an interesting topic, especially for companies looking to grow their brand in the international market.
It might not be a platform every company needs immediately, but it's a tool to consider for brands that care about acquiring customers through AI.

Frequently asked

Whoever pays to appear on your questions is competing for the same answer, whether or not anyone put them on the rival list. You can move one across into the competitor set and track it like any other brand.

Whether the page carried a placement, how many, and which of them sat inside the AI answer rather than around it. Ad load can be counted on the surfaces that still render a results page around the generated answer.

Answer space is finite. When a placement takes a line, an organic mention loses one — and because it is the same prompt history you already track, the trade-off is visible rather than inferred.

Sponsored placements are rolling out in answer surfaces and in AI Overviews. The page tracks what is live where, because the picture changes by quarter and by market.

Only where your buyers already ask and you already lose the organic answer. Paying to appear next to an answer that names a competitor is not a strategy.

No. The models cite sources, not spend. An ad buys the slot for its run; it does not make the answer name you.

Measure the question first. If a prompt drives real assisted sessions and you are absent from the answer, that is a candidate; if nobody asks it, the slot is cheap for a reason.

No. Rixe measures the questions and tells you which are worth paying for; the buying stays in your ad account, where the budget already lives.

No, it sits beside them. The same buyer asks a search engine and an assistant on the same day, and the two surfaces answer differently.

That you buy visibility that ends the moment the budget does, while the organic answer keeps naming someone else. The measurement is what stops that being invisible.

The questions your buyers are already asking

Three numbers, one screen. Enough to know which way the week went.
